Immigration and intermarriage rate

This reminds me of my 2003 post on Group Bias in Mate Selection and Outmarriage. In that post I argued that -given a preference level of marrying members of one's own group- larger groups have lower outmarriage rates.

Immigration Correlates with Slowed Rate of Intermarriages in United States
The study suggests Hispanic and Asian immigrants are likely to marry among themselves. In addition, more native-born minorities are selecting marriage partners from the growing pool of immigrants.

The result is that the number of native-born Hispanic men in intermarriages with whites declined by nearly 4 percentage points between 1990 and 2000 – from 35.3 percent to 31.9 percent. The number of native-born Asian American men in intermarriages declined from 50.2 to 45.8 percent.

The expression "the number of" is probably unfortunate, since it is the percentage that is declining, but the percentage is out of a bigger minority population.

This is true of blacks as well.

"It is found that racial endogamy is much stronger for immigrants as compared to natives; it is 4.9 times more likely for black immigrants than for African-Americans. Additionally, black immigrants have the highest rates of endogamy of immigrants. Also, black immigrants are much more likely to marry other same-race immigrants and African-Americans, than to out-marry racially. Native-born whites are also 1.6 times more likely to marry a native-born black than an immigrant counterpart. Immigrant black women are generally more likely to marry native-born whites than their male counterparts."

On the other hand African Americans are more likely to marry and date whites than immigrant blacks are. This makes sense...obviously cultural distance is less.

I also thought this was interesting, also from nation master. We focus on marriage a lot, that is a high bar, but what we should focus on is birth and race of parents. About 50% of blacks are not married and about 50% of black women in America will never marry. About 25% of white females have children out of wedlock.

So interracial marriage is not an accurate survey of who is with who.

"Research yields that 7% of married black man are with white wives and 15% of black men cohabit with white women."

15% of black men live with white women, that is very high...about 3 million...and how many children are there? I would be over 50% of these couples have at least one kid.

Thing is not all states keep records of parents race and often the father is not even on the birth certificate depending on what the mother wants when the two people are not married.
