This may sound science-fictional, but consider how many things we take for granted today would have been science-fictional 30 years ago.<BR/><BR/>One possibility would be a viroid that enters the cell, looks for the specific DNA error to be fixed, and self-destructs if it doesn't find it. It would then release (into the mitochondrion) a complete copy of the corrected mtChromosome, along with some sort of directed intra-cellular, mitochondrially-targeted destructor for the incorrect mtChromosome.
