For those who are unfamiliar with World War 2 history, the Royal Hellenic Army's success in defeating Mussolini's invasion in the fall of 1940 was the first major Allied victory. Although Greece was eventually overrun the following year after the Germans intervened,Hitler himself towards the end of the war blamed the ultimate defeat of the Nazis to a very great extent on the unplanned need to divert resources to overcome Greek resistance.
Just to add to Moore's comment. Most WWII historians agree that had Nazi Germany attacked a few weeks earlier than 21 June 1941 there would have taken Moscow, which would have increased their chances of forcing the USSR to surrender. At the very least it would have greatly prolonged this very nasty war for several more years.
Their plan was to launch Operation Barbarossa in Mid-April, but had to postpone it in order to bail out Italy from their beating in the Balkans.
Yes, we all owe Greece a debt of gratitude for their courage. A pity that this debt is mostly unacknowledged now.
